we were the kids up on notch
we didn’t seek answers/we found salamanders under rocks

roller-blading down our own “devil’s backbone”
recording prank calls from louie’s house phone
smashing glass on an empty lot
‘til the neighbor yelled out the window “i’m calling the cops!”

then one day we went out to play
